Diabetes is a health condition that affects the level of sugar in the blood. It can occur when the body makes little or no insulin. The result is that the cells of the body don't have enough energy to function properly.

Symptoms Of Diabetes In Pets

Diabetic animals will exhibit the following symptoms:

  • Rapid weight loss
  • Increased thirst
  • Vomiting
  • Lack of appetite
  • No energy
  • Excessive sleeping
  • Cloudy eyes
  • Increased urination
  • Recurring infections
  • Wounds that do not heal

If you notice any of these symptoms lingering in your pet, consult with our veterinarian.

How Diabetes is Diagnosed In Pets

Our veterinarian will first test the glucose and ketone levels in your pet's urine. If needed, we will then test the glucose level in the blood. If glucose is found in both urine and blood, a diagnosis of diabetes will be given.

Treatment And Care Of Pets With Diabetes

With proper treatment, maintenance, and care, your pet can live a long and happy life. The first thing our vet will do is prescribe a daily dose of insulin. They will answer any questions and show you how to administer it. Next, your vet will discuss the special dietary needs of your pet. Typically, a low-carb, high-protein diet is prescribed and special food is available through the veterinary practice.

Finally, it will be up to you to monitor your pets' drinking and eating habits, urine output, and weight. You'll also need to ensure they get daily exercise. Regular vet appointments will be necessary to monitor the glucose levels in your pet as well.
