Dog Vaccination

Dog vaccinations are preventative measures to protect your dog from harmful parasites, organisms, or diseases that can potentially make it gravely ill or be fatal. Keeping vaccines up to date is critical to being a responsible pet parent.

What Vaccinations Are Available?

Dog vaccinations are classified as modified live or non-living vaccines, which means they contain either organisms that are purified and alive or they have organisms that are not alive. Vets typically go with purified living cultures because they provide your dog with the best immune response and protection. Strengthening the immune system is what vaccines are all about.

The following are some of the dog vaccinations available:

DHLP – Canine Distemper Complex Vaccine

The Canine Distemper Complex vaccine, or DHLP, is administered every three years to dogs to prevent the canine distemper virus, leptospirosis, parainfluenza, and infectious canine hepatitis.

Parvovirus Vaccine

The parvovirus vaccine is administered to adult dogs and puppies on a dosage schedule, depending on their age. This vaccine protects from the deadly canine parvovirus.

Coronavirus Vaccine

The coronavirus (“CCoV”) vaccine is typically given along with the DHLP vaccine. Although not all dogs require this one, it does protect against transmittable diseases often found in dog packs or shelters.

Lyme Disease Vaccine

The Lyme Disease vaccine is administered to adult dogs and puppies on a dosage schedule depending on their age. It protects against Lyme Disease, which is transmitted by tick bites.

Bordetella Vaccine

The Bordetella vaccine is administered annually to dogs to protect them from Bordetella bronchiseptica. It is a bacterial infection affecting the upper respiratory system and causes “Kennel Cough,” which is contagious among dogs.

Leptospirosis Vaccine

The leptospirosis vaccine is normally given annually to dogs to protect against the leptospira bacteria transmitted through contaminated urine in soil, grass, bushes, or any water source. It can be deadly and sometimes transmits from animals to humans.

Rattlesnake Vaccine

The rattlesnake vaccine is administered to dogs at least 30 days before possible rattlesnake exposure. While it does not prevent rattlesnake poisoning, it does reduce the potency long enough to seek veterinarian care.

Rabies Vaccine

The rabies vaccine is administered to dogs about every three years. It protects against the deadly rabies virus that is highly contagious and transmits through saliva. All U.S. states require this vaccine because of its extremely highly contagious aspect.
